Norman McLaren’s second film at the NFB, V for Victory is a propaganda film made to promote the sale of War Bonds. The letter “V” is used as the central motif in this single-frame animation film set to a brass band rendition of John Philip Sousa’s march The Thunderer. McLaren drew symbols, stick men and lettering directly on clear 35mm film stock, which was then colour printed in a laboratory using the Warnercolor process.
