John Kemeny
Producer
(b. April 17, 1925 Budapest, Hungary)
After beginning his career in film distribution and promotion in his native Hungary, John Kemeny moved to Canada in 1957 and began one of the longest and most successful careers in Canadian filmmaking. He started at the National Film Board as an editor in 1959 and got his big break writing, producing and editing Donald Brittain’s Bethune (1964). In his twelve years at the NFB, he produced more than eighty films, including Brittain’s Memorandum (1965), Tanya Ballantyne’s The Things I Cannot Change (1967), Peter Pearson’s The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar (1968) – which won eight Canadian Film Awards, including Best Picture – and George Kaczender’s Don’t Let the Angels Fall (1969), one of the first English-Canadian films invited to compete at the Festival de Cannes.
Kemeny’s first production after leaving the NFB was the hugely successful The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974), which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and a host of other awards. In 1979, he teamed with Denis Héroux and founded the International Cinema Corporation (ICC). Their first collaboration, Louis Malle’s Atlantic City (1980), starring Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon, was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture – the only Canadian drama ever to receive the honour. It also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture and the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival.
In the early eighties, ICC merged with Robert Lantos’s RSL Productions to form Alliance Entertainment, and soon afterward Kemeny left the company. Since the mid-eighties, he has produced mainly for Canadian television. He received a Special Achievement Genie Award in 1991 for his contribution to the Canadian film industry.
