Despite verbose, didactic opening and closing sequences, this documentary by Jean Palardy on the development of the co-operative movement in the Maritimes since the twenties offers a memorable portrait of the daily life of Maritime fishermen and shows how the co-operatives helped fishermen emerge from the twenties into a more productive age. The Rising Tide was nominated for an Academy Award® for best short documentary and received a special citation at the Canadian Film Awards.
