Three friends – Kevin (Ryan Reynolds), Sam (Kristin Booth) and Rob (Joris Jarsky) – have an unusual hobby: they plan foolproof heists that they have no intention of carrying out. The game goes wrong when their latest plan is stolen and carried out, bringing them to the attention of the police. The situation worsens when a mysterious man (David Suchet) approaches them with an offer: plan and execute a $20-million heist for him, or go to jail.

Like Men with Brooms, Foolproof was one of the first films produced under Telefilm Canada’s mandate aimed at procuring five per cent of the domestic box office through the production of commercial movies with audience appeal. With an estimated $8 million budget, including an unprecedented marketing budget of $2-million, Foolproof enjoyed the widest release of a Canadian movie to date but was a colossal box-office failure, grossing a mere $230,000 its opening weekend and less then $500,000 overall.
