Cadet Rousselle

(Chansons de chez-nous, No. 1)

Year: 1947
Language: French
Runtime: 9 min
Director: George Dunning
Producer: James Beveridge
Animation: Colin Low, George Dunning
Music: Maurice Blackburn, Le lyrique
Production Company: National Film Board of Canada

This witty and inventive film uses colourful puppets to illustrate an old satirical French folk song about the ostentatious, affected Cadet Rouselle, for whom everything goes wrong: he falls down a ladder, trips on battlements, and his dog does not obey him. The characters are made from flat metal shapes articulated against richly coloured backgrounds.
