The Hutterites are an Anabaptist religious group who live communally in colonies. Persecuted for hundreds of years in Europe (where their leader, Jacob Hutter, was burned at the stake in 1536), they settled in the United States in the mid-nineteenth century before migrating to the Canadian Prairies in 1918. This award-winning National Film Board production, in characteristic Unit B style, was made inside a Hutterite farm community in Alberta and shows all aspects of their daily life. It won a Canadian Film Award for John Spotton’s black-and-white cinematography.
