You Don’t Back Down examines the McMahons, a couple who get more than they bargained for when they are sent to Nigeria to aid in the country’s efforts towards modernization. Rather than engaging in triumphalist rhetoric about the McMahons’ mission, Owen stresses their struggle to come to terms with a radically different culture.
